Using selective media and appropriate techniques, quantitative bacteriological studies of the stomach, the small intestine, the large intestine, and the feces of adult Meriones unguiculatus have been made. In most cases, growth was found both aerobically and anaerobically with lactobacilli being the most numerous organisms in the gastrointestinal tract and in the feces. The anaerobic clostridia, enterococci, and flavobacteria were also present in large numbers in all parts of the tract and in the feces. In contrast, aerobic enterococci, staphylococci, and flavobacteria were less numerous and found mostly in the large intestine and in the feces. In anaerobic conditions, the coliforms were detected in large numbers in the feces and in all parts of the gastrointestinal tract; however, when grown aerobically, they were found in smaller numbers in the large intestine and feces and occasionally in the stomach and small intestine.
